How this is worked out
- The federal residential clean energy credit (Internal Revenue Code Section 25D) is not applied. The IRS page for the credit states that it "equals 30% of the costs of new, qualified clean energy property for your home installed anytime from 2022 through December 31, 2025" and that "the credit is not available for any property placed in service after December 31, 2025" (irs.gov, page last reviewed July 4, 2026, read again on our updated date). If an installer prices a 30% federal credit into a 2026 Arizona quote, ask them in writing which authority supports it, and check with a tax professional.
- The Arizona credit is the credit for solar energy devices: 25% of the cost of the device, and no more than $1,000 in a tax year, with an aggregate $1,000 limit for the same residence and a carryforward of up to five consecutive years (ARS 43-1083). It offsets Arizona income tax, so it is worth less than $1,000 to a household with a small Arizona tax bill.
- Price per watt is your input. The $2.85 default is a typical 2026 Arizona quote and varies with roof type and pitch, panel and inverter tier, whether a main panel upgrade is needed, and how the job is financed. Tucson Electric Power says the rate is locked for up to 10 years from the date you request interconnection. Ask your own utility for the rate that will apply to you.
Do I need a battery in Arizona?
Not for the system to work. A battery moves midday generation into the evening and provides backup during an outage, which matters more when exports are paid below retail. Whether it pays depends on your rate plan and your usage pattern, so price it as a separate decision from the panels.
